Last call for ‘Rumors’ at LBHS
Laguna Beach High School’s Park Avenue Players are doing their last performances of “Rumors” at the Artists Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The play, set in the late 1980s and about four affluent New York couples who show up for a party only to find mayhem, is directed by Amanda Saunders, a professional actor, director, and high school alumna, according to a press release.

El Morro takes third at math competition
The Math Stars Club from El Morro Elementary School competed in the 2012 Mathematics Field Day Competition, sponsored by the Orange County Mathematics Council, on May 19.
Nineteen school districts and 50 schools participated in the event, which saw El Morro fifth-graders take third place in the Measurement/Geometry section, according to a news release.
The team was coached by Annie Bochenek, Robert Lebby and Cindy Sorensen. Fifth-grade students who competed were Alexis Yang, Christian Herry, Mason Lebby, and Cal Nielson. The fourth-grade team included El Morro students Kenneth Chu, Shane Lawson, Casey Sorensen, and Kian Trengove.

Annual Art of Giving Gala
The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach held its 12th annual Art of Giving Gala on May 12 at the Montage in Laguna Beach, according to a news release.
More than $100,000 was raised from guests and the community before the live auction even began.
“We are extremely grateful that the community has embraced the club and helped us to achieve our most successful event ever,” wrote Bill Wood, board president for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach, in a statement.
The Boys & Girls Club offers various opportunities for youth with the goal of them learning to give back, the release said.

Volunteers beautify club
More than 70 volunteers from Commonwealth Financial Network helped beautify the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach on April 30.
The volunteers painted, gardened and cleaned up various areas at the club and built and painted four picnic tables for the teen center and weeded the hillside in the Teen Courtyard.
“It’s just so wonderful to see people come together like this; people who believe in our cause,” Nick Robitaille, assistant branch director of the Boys & Girls Club, said in a statement. “We would never get around to doing these projects, so it really means a lot to us to get this kind of support.”

LBHS Solar Cup Team competes
The Laguna Beach High School Solar Cup Team competed with students from 39 Southern California high schools in the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s 10th annual Solar Cup, according to a press release.
The three-day event had students build, equip and race the 16-foot, single-seat canoe, which was powered by the sun.
The LBHS team took second place in the rookie division for solar endurance, first place in their division for their PSA, second place overall in their division and 18th place overall, according to the release.

Athletes named Students of the Month
Two Laguna Beach High School senior athletes were honored as Students of the Month for May by the Rotary Club of Laguna Beach, according to a news release.
Marina Destinee Paul, a scholar-athlete for four years at the high school, and Derek Riegel, also a scholar and football and basketball player, were recognized and given certificates.
Paul is set to attend Georgetown University in the fall on a women’s soccer athletic scholarship, the release said.
Reigel will attend San Diego State University in the fall, where he is enrolled in the School of Business.
Both are set to received scholarships at the Honors Convocation later this month, according to the news release.
