Woman Of The Year Named

The Laguna Beach Woman’s Club has selected Ann Quilter, a long time contributor to the community, as its 2011 Woman of the Year.

Quilter recently lead the effort to aid victims of the December flood.

“No one asked her to do it,” Councilwoman Elizabeth Pearson said in a news release. “She just jumped in and assessed the needs and started helping victims — one by one.”

As co-chairwoman of the campaign to raise funds for Susi Q Senior Center, Quilter is also credited with spearheading the drive to bring the center to fruition.

Quilter presided over the League of Women Voters in the 1980s, according to the release. In the 1990s she served as president of Thurston Middle School’s PTA and then as president of Laguna Beach High School’s PTA. An active member of the United Methodist Church of Laguna Beach, she has co-lead work teams to Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Cuba and Biloxi, Miss.

A luncheon to honor Quilter will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 10 at the Woman’s Club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive. Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Checks can be made out to The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach and sent to 286 St. Ann’s Drive, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. Reservations must be received by June 3.

Since 1995, the Woman’s Club has selected a Woman of the Year, honoring a local woman for her consistent community volunteer service. Nominations are submitted by the Woman’s Club general membership while a committee made up of former nominees makes the final selection.

City Manager’s Weekly Update

Sergeant Greg Bartz – Sgt. Greg Bartz who retired in 2004 after more than 30 years with the Police Department, passed away Monday at his home in Madison, Conn, according to City Manager John Pietig’s Friday Update of May 6. Bartz was 61 years old and is survived by his wife, Dawn, and five children.

An additional herd of goats recently approved by the City Council arrived to help graze the extraordinary vegetation growth this year, Pietig wrote. The herd of about 300 goats have begun their fire prevention and mitigation efforts behind City Hall. Once finished behind City Hall, the herd will graze below Skyline Drive and eventually toward the back of Top of the World. The primary herd remains in North Laguna and is grazing in a southerly direction toward the downtown area.
