DAR awards program is Wednesday

The Laguna Beach Daughters of the American Revolution Citywide School Awards program will take place at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Artists’ Theatre at Laguna Beach High School, 625 Park Ave.

The annual awards program recognizes outstanding students of American history and those who personify qualities of good citizenship in grades five through 12 in all Laguna Beach public and private schools, according to a news release.

The awards are put on by the Laguna Beach Patience Wright Chapter of DAR, which was founded in 1939 and is the second oldest chapter in Orange County, the release said.

The group will host winning students and their parents, as well as principals, counselors and teachers from Laguna Beach High School, Thurston Middle School, Top of the World Elementary School, El Morro Elementary School, Anneliese Schools and St. Catherine of Siena Parish School.

LCAD gets $10K toward scholarships

Laguna College of Art & Design received a $10,000 gift from the Festival of Arts Foundation, which will be used to fund scholarships for students who are residents of Laguna Beach.

“The festival is the wellspring of our college and the support of the Festival of Arts Foundation over the years has nurtured and inspired many of our finest students,” LCAD President Jonathan Burke said in a statement. “These are exciting times at LCAD, full of opportunity and challenge. As we work to prepare the next generation of great artists and designers, the support of the Festival of Arts is an invaluable endorsement of our efforts.”

Attend Latino Family Literacy Night

Laguna Beach School District Community Liaison Javier Diaz and El Morro Elementary School Reading Interventionist Livi Adams will conduct a family literacy parent education class at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the LBUSD Board Room, 550 Blumont St.

The class will help parents enhance the literacy and language skills of Latino children, according to a news release.

“I encourage parents to attend this valuable parent education class,” Supt. Sherine Smith said in a statement. “All parents want their children to do well in school and be prepared for colleges, careers, or military service. This class will provide parents with simple, practical strategies to build their children’s interest and desire to read, as well as improve reading comprehension skills.”

Coffee Break raises almost $5,000

The PTA Coffee Break’s first fundraiser netted almost $5,000 on April 19.

Local author Tyler Durman hosted the event, which was held at the Laguna Beach Women’s Club. A sold-out crowd listened to Durman’s stand-up comedy routine on parenting.

Coffee Break is a monthly forum to discuss topics important to parents.
