Holy Week events

Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave., will hold special services during Holy Week from Monday through April 22.

The Sanctuary will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The Holy Week Scriptures will be read, followed by a time for private reflection and prayer.

At 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday (New Commandment Thursday), we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper. There will be special music by Chancel Choir and Praise Team. Nursery and childcare are provided.

At noon April 22, Good Friday, there will be special music by the Chancel Quartet, bells, instrumentalists and soloists. Nursery and childcare are again provided.

Palm Sunday celebration at Neighborhood Congregational Church will start at 10 a.m., featuring the procession of children with palms and singing, special music by Pranam, liturgical dance and handbell music.

A Worship Service of Holy Communion and Footwashing in remembrance of the Last Supper is at 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday.

On Good Friday, April 22, Neighborhood Church will open the labyrinth in Bridge Hall from noon 6 p.m. Scripture readings and short meditative prayers will be available. At 7 p.m. the Tenebrae service will move from light to darkness, in remembrance of Jesus leaving the world.

On Easter Sunday, April 24, Neighborhood Church plans to host a 6:30 a.m. community sunrise service at Alta Laguna Park suffused with Native American spirituality, including flute and drumming to the four directions, whose intersection forms a cross. As the sun rises, Neighborhood Church invites hikers, families and seekers of God to celebrate the gift of new life and a new day.

Neighborhood Church’s festive Easter service at 10 a.m. April 24 will be in the church sanctuary, as dancers and singer Nicolas Leighton lead the transition from the sorrow of Good Friday to the slow dawning awareness that new life is in our midst as we begin to celebrate the joy of resurrection hope. Following worship, refreshments will be served across the courtyard in Bridge Hall and children are invited to join in the annual Easter Egg hunt on the Montessori playground.

A is for Abstract

Initiated by teacher Tracey Belland, Chabad Jewish Center preschoolers ages 2 to 5 will again spend a year engaged in the Artful ABCs, learning art concepts while exploring letters, numbers, songs, literature, cooking and playing in school.

The curriculum, which will begin again this fall, teaches A for Abstract, C for Chagall, D for Degas, and W for Warhol. The children learn poems for each letter and are able to identify the different styles of each art master.

Belland added a museum pass book, which mimics a travel passport, where the children get a stamp after learning a new artist. They decorate it themselves and keep it in their artists coloring book until the end of the year, where they celebrate with Graduation at the Guggenheim.
