LBHS senior receives DAR’s Good Citizen Award
A Laguna Beach High School senior has won the 2012 Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.
Mariana Acevedo was recognized by the DAR for her community service that includes volunteering at St. Joseph Cancer Center, helping with homework assistance at Juntos and participating in SafeRides in Laguna Beach. She hopes to be an orthopedic surgeon someday.
As the winner, Mariana will ride with the DAR’s entry in the Patriots Day Parade on Saturday.
The DAR Good Citizen Award includes a monetary prize.
In her essay for the scholarship contest, Mariana wrote, “[Although] I am not a natural-born citizen, I have a deep connection with this country and her importance in the world. Good Citizens come in different shapes and sizes, color and backgrounds.”

Ultimate Wine Festival benefits Boys & Girls Club
Laguna Beach’s inaugural Ultimate Wine Festival will feature more than 20 of the state’s top winemakers, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Boys & Girls Club.
The event is from 2 to 5 p.m. March 10 at Rock’N Fish, 422 S. Coast Hwy., second floor.
Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and wine from participating wineries including Opus One, Silver Oak, Ceja Vineyards, Grgich Hills, Terra Valentine, Far Niente, Dolce, Nickel & Nickel, Quintessa, Faust, Staglin Family Vineyards, Twomey, Cline, Rombauer, Pisoni/Lucia, Bridlewood, MacMurray, Freemark Abbey, Arrowood, Cambria Estates, Murphy Goode and La Sirena, according to a news release.

Computers donated to Boys & Girls Club
A donation of 20 computers from the Laguna Beach Unified School District has been given to the Boys & Girls Club.
Victor Guthrie, district director of Educational Technology and Information Services, said the computers are still fully functional, but they don’t meet district technology standards and aren’t powerful enough for district software anymore.
They will find a new home at the Boys & Girls Club, and Guthrie and LBUSD School/Community Liaison Javier Diaz will hold technological training for parents in Spanish and English. The training dates are 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and March 14 at the club, 1085 Laguna Canyon Road.

Parent education program will be offered
A seven-week program aimed to help parents with children ages 5 to 10 will begin Wednesday.
“Loving Solutions: Elementary School Parent Education Program” will be led by expert presenter Laura Rivas.
“This class is being taught by an experienced therapist who has also worked in the school system for many years,” Jami Parsons, a district elementary school counselor, said in a statement. “She is able to help families pinpoint what isn’t working and provide concrete skills to manage challenging behaviors, set boundaries, establish routines and consequences and navigate family change.”
The classes will run on consecutive Wednesdays, except for April 11, which is during the district’s spring break. They will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Community Center, 380 Third St.
