Plant repairs call for watering suspension

Laguna Beach homeowners and businesses are being asked not to water outdoors Sunday through March 6, due to the closure of a regional water treatment plant, according to a news statement issued jointly by the Laguna Beach County Water District and South Coast Water District.

Both agencies provide water to customers in Laguna Beach. The outdoor watering suspension is needed due to the shutdown of the Diemer Filtration Plant in Yorba Linda, which supplies water to south Orange County. The plant is in need of repairs and upgrades, according to the news release.

Drinking water for Laguna Beach is primarily obtained from Northern California and the Colorado River and treated at the Diemer facility. Of this, about half is used to water lawns and landscaping, and of that, half is wasted due to over-watering, poorly maintained sprinklers and other causes, according to the news release.

The County Water District serves 25,000 residents within an 8.5-square-mile area of Laguna Beach. South Coast Water District serves 43,000 residents in South Laguna, Dana Point, parts of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
