‘Gallery’ opening was a hot social event

The one-night-only opening of “The Dolphin Gallery” at Top of the World Elementary School was a success.

On Feb. 10, more than 330 Laguna Beach families attended Arts Night at the school, which transformed the school’s multipurpose room into a makeshift art gallery with visual arts pieces shown off by every student in the school.

There was also live entertainment provided by students, a potluck dessert and crafts tables for younger kids to make art projects.

Annual SchoolPower dinner dance is March 3

SchoolPower is preparing for its Fantasy Floral Gala on March 3 at the Montage Resort & Spa.

The annual dinner dance will feature a live and silent auction, cocktail reception, a gourmet dinner, casino tables and dancing, according to a news release.

New additions to the event include a live deejay, a raffle for a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle donated by McKenna Volkswagen worth $25,000, and more giveaways.

“This will be one of the most memorable events of the year. You will not want to miss it,” co-chairwomen Patience Shutts and Kim Ressler said in a statement. “Our amazing community whose commitment to our schools is so strong, so important, deserves a truly spectacular event, and that is what we promise to give them.”

Families and business can become Giving Garden donors with a donation of $300.

Shap Show nets $7,000 for Class of 2012

The 24th annual Shap Show, “No Suits Allowed,” on Feb. 11 raised $7,000 for Laguna Beach High School Class of 2012’s Safe and Sober Grad Night.

The night kicked off with a sold-out pre-show dinner at Asada. Then, during the three-hour-long concert, students and staff performed 33 musical numbers for an enthusiastic audience, according to a news release.

The show originated in 1979 when some students approached teacher Gary Shapiro about performing to help raise money for the senior class. That first performance was a one-man show, but the next year it evolved into a variety of student and guest performances, according to Shapiro.

Principal Joanna Culverhouse even got in the act this year, with a special appearance playing the acoustic guitar.

Girls basketball registration begins

The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach has opened registration for basketball for girls in kindergarten through ninth grade.

Led by the club’s athletic director Hans Laroche, the program will help the girls learn basketball skills, give them a chance to be part of a team and will give them a great shot of self esteem.

Player evaluations will be March 5 to 9, and weekly practices start April 2. The first games will be April 21.

Basketball league fees are $100 per player and include a new team uniform. All players must be members of the Boys & Girls Club.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for families or businesses for $500.
