Fugitive rocker arrested while touring with band

Police arrested a fugitive wanted in Connecticut last week when he and his touring blues band stopped for a gig in Laguna Niguel.

Johnny Vibrato — whose real name is John McNally, 49 — eluded law enforcement for two years while touring with the band he sings and plays guitar for, the Razorbacks. Connecticut prosecutors charged McNally in 2010 with multiple counts of sexual assault and injury on a minor.

Tustin police found McNally in Laguna Niguel after Connecticut state police informed them his band might be somewhere in Southern California.

“The initial information was that he was on the run for two years and that he has been touring with his band,” said Tustin Sgt. Duane Havourd. “He was a member of the band, but I don’t know exactly what he was doing in the city of Tustin or Laguna Niguel.”

Orange County sheriff’s deputies and Tustin officers arrested McNally on Feb. 1 at a saloon in the 27000 block of Camino Capistrano.

McNally was booked at Orange County Jail and may face extradition to Connecticut. His bail was set at $50,000.

‘Ireland’s Musical Ambassadors’ come to Soka

The Chieftains are on their 50th anniversary tour, and there’s only one place they can be seen in Southern California — Soka University.

The Grammy Award-winning Irish music group will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at Soka’s Performing Arts Center.

Area teen wins Youth of the Year award

A San Juan Capistrano teen won the Youth of the Year award for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley, which has branches in Aliso Viejo and San Juan Capistrano.

Yesenia Garcia, 17, will now go on to compete against other club members throughout Orange County for the title and a $1,000 college scholarship.

Yesenia has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for 11 years and has been involved in many community service projects and activities, including the Torch Club leadership group.

If she wins the countywide competition, she will compete for California Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship.

Legacy Leadership Award winner named

St. Mary’s School in Aliso Viejo has chosen this year’s winner of the 10th annual Father Ernest D. Sillers Legacy Leadership Award.

Eighth-grader Abigail Jackson, of Aliso Viejo, was picked for demonstrating superior leadership skills, service and civic responsibility, according to a news release from the school.

“On behalf of the St. Mary’s community, it is my privilege to offer our congratulations to Abigail on receiving this significant honor,” Headmaster John O’Brien said in a statement. “Abigail and her fellow classmates exemplify the strong qualities of leadership we work to develop in students at St. Mary’s, and we are proud to recognize her accomplishments at this year’s Tribute to Leadership ceremony.”

Students who applied for the award wrote two essays and were interviewed by a panel of judges. There were 12 finalists this year.

The competition puts focus on principles called the “Four Aces,” which are attitude, commitment, engagement and service.

Abigail has received Headmaster’s Honors for having a GPA of 4.0 or above, participates in drumline and plays AYSO soccer and volleyball and lacrosse for St. Mary’s.
