TOW students to showcase in Dolphin Gallery

A new gallery will open in Laguna Beach on Feb. 10 — and it will close that same night.

From 5:30 to 9 p.m., Top of the World Elementary School is hosting “TOW Arts Night,” which will transform its multipurpose room into a one-night-only exclusive venue — The Dolphin Gallery.

On the walls of the gallery will be one visual arts piece made by every student at the school. To add ambience, student musicians will play in the background. There will also be a project station, where younger kids can do hands-on art projects.

TOW Arts Night is sponsored by the TOW PTA, with some funding from a Festival of Arts Foundation grant.

Local sailor achieves Quartermaster rank

Laguna Beach High School junior Liz Fletcher has earned the highest level of Quartermaster in the Mariners Sea Scouting program.

This rank is the equivalent of an Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouting and involves completing a community service project and mastering a number of maritime skills, according to a news release.

Liz and two other girls in the same “ship,” Sarah Wyman from San Clemente and Jackie Wetzel from Laguna Niguel, have all earned the Quartermaster rank, of which only 15 are earned nationwide, according to the release.

“A Quartermaster is not only a very qualified sailor, but is also a leader amongst her peers. Very few attain this rank and having three local young women achieve this designation in one year is quite remarkable,” teacher Jim “Skip” Wehan said in a statement.

Liz has been working on a memorial regatta in honor of her friend and fellow sailor, Jeff Adam, who died last June. The event will take place in Dana Point Harbor on March 4.

Meeting for study abroad program is Feb. 9

Laguna Beach High School students interested in studying abroad for a semester, summer or year should attend a meeting where Peter Maris, regional director for AFS, will speak at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 9 in teacher Rod Ortiz’ room, No. 80.

Students who spend time abroad can receive $1,000 off tuition from Laguna’s AFS chapter.

Information about hosting foreign exchange students will also be available.

Festival offering arts scholarships for seniors

The Festival of Arts is now accepting scholarship applications for high school seniors who live in Laguna Beach or attend Laguna Beach High School.

Scholarships will be awarded to students who excel in film, performing arts, visual arts and writing, according to a news release.

“Students with talents in multiple fields are encouraged to submit an application in more than one category,” Festival of Arts Board Secretary and Scholarship Chair Pat Kollenda said in a statement. However, students can only win one scholarship.

Scholarship amounts are a minimum of $1,000 and can be renewed for up to four years.

The deadline to apply is March 16. Auditions and interviews will take place in March and April.
