Heisman ring stolen from Laguna Niguel home
Former Los Angeles Rams running back John Cappelletti is pleading with the public to help find his stolen NFL and college memorabilia, including an anniversary ring for winning the Heisman Trophy while playing at Penn State.
Orange County sheriff’s investigators said thieves broke into Cappelletti’s Laguna Niguel home and made off with at least $50,000 in jewelry and sports memorabilia, including a 25-year anniversary Heisman ring. Investigators said they believe the break-in occurred Jan. 20.
Cappelletti, who played professional football with the then-Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers, won Penn State’s only Heisman Trophy in 1973. He played under the late Joe Paterno.
The former running back donated the trophy to the university’s All Sports Museum.
“It’s difficult,” Cappelletti said at a news conference on Tuesday. “You know, I’ve had a rough fall between the Penn State stuff and Coach Paterno last week and now something like this happening.”
Cappelletti was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
