Man charged with another hate crime in Newport Beach

A 66-year-old probationer who pleaded guilty to a hate crime last year was charged Tuesday with another hate crime in Newport Beach.

Danny Martin Loros was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and a count of criminal threats, all felonies, and also faces sentencing enhancements for a hate crime and a hate crime with a prior conviction, according to court records.

Loros was accused of attacking a victim with a flare gun in Newport Beach, according to the criminal complaint.

Police and prosecutors did not immediately respond to messages for details.

Loros pleaded guilty in July of last year to a racially motivated attack on a 7-Eleven store owner in Newport Beach. He was sentenced to six months in jail.

He was sentenced to an additional 60 days in jail for a probation violation in August of last year. He had probation revoked again in October and was sentenced to two years in jail, but the sentence was suspended, according to court records.

While making racial slurs and comments “denigrating” to immigrants, Loros threw a liquor bottle at the victim’s stomach on May 7 of last year, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Loros pleaded guilty July 30, 2021, to a misdemeanor count of assault with a deadly weapon and a felony count of violation of civil rights with violent injury.

As part of the plea deal, the assault count was reduced from felony to misdemeanor, and a sentencing enhancement for a hate crime was dropped, according to court records.
