Corona del Mar High School’s Sea Kings toss their crowns into the sky for graduation
With their heads held high even as a breeze might have sent their hair askew, this year’s graduating class of Corona del Mar High School celebrated Thursday to the sound of airhorns.
A sea of baby blue graduation gowns stretched out as far as the eye could see on Davidson Field. Some of the new grads wore sunglasses.
Student speakers and performers sent the graduating class of 330 Sea Kings ahead to their future to the sound of the high school band playing “Pomp and Circumstance” and a student’s rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.”
It was the 59th graduating class at Corona del Mar High School since the school was founded in 1962.
Seniors Katie Barnes, Jessica Means and Emily Valentine offered their remarks to the student body, encouraging their fellow classmates to live in the moment and be comfortable with the knowledge of not knowing what lies ahead for them.
“Congratulations to the class of 2022,” said Principal Joshua Hill in an email statement prepared for his students. “You hung on during COVID-19 and you were there when we needed you to help us bring our programs, traditions and activities back. You found a way to confront every obstacle you faced and overcome it or work around it.
“You taught us about the need for a social-emotional lens in all of the teaching and learning that we do. You showed us how important it was to be present, in person. We know you will be successful wherever you go because we have seen you be successful here.
“Best wishes for a brilliant future.”
