26-year-old inmate dies in Huntington Beach jail cell

Huntington Beach police reported Friday an inmate taken into custody Thursday night on suspicion of public intoxication died after reportedly experiencing a medical emergency while alone in his jail cell.

Trevor Randall Loflin, 26, of Huntington Beach, was booked shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday on charges of disorderly conduct due to intoxication, according to the department’s arrest log.

He was being housed alone in a jail cell Friday morning when he reportedly experienced a medical emergency, police reported in a release issued later that day. Jail staff discovered him and attempted to provide life-saving measures before pronouncing him dead.

Police said while his death did not appear to be suspicious in nature, a final cause would be determined following a toxicology report and autopsy by the coroner’s office.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is overseeing the investigation into the in-custody death. Huntington Beach police offered no additional information on the incident beyond Friday’s release.

Loflin was arrested in September of 2016 for first-degree burglary, a felony, and petty theft, to which he pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to two years in state prison, but that sentence was stayed as he was remanded to an institution, court records show.

Earlier that year, he was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and carrying a switch blade. He pleaded guilty to both misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to serve 10 days in jail, records indicate.
