Man jumps from 405 overpass in Irvine in apparent suicide attempt, struck by box truck

California Highway Patrol officers issued a SigAlert Monday morning on a southbound portion of the 405 Freeway near MacArthur Boulevard, after a man reportedly fell or jumped to his death from an overpass onto the freeway, officials reported.

CHP spokesman Officer Florentino said officers were called to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. Monday regarding a victim who’d been struck by a vehicle in the southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway.

Olivera confirmed a man had jumped from the overpass into oncoming traffic and was struck by a white box truck as he descended.

“When officers arrived on scene, it appears he did jump onto the Interstate 405, where he struck a vehicle traveling southbound,” Oliver said. “He was still airborne when he got hit.”

CHP personnel temporarily closed three lanes of traffic while the coroner’s office was called to the scene. Traffic slowed as lanes remained closed for approximately two hours, Olivera said.

Travelers on the freeway who witnessed the incident described on social media seeing someone jump from MacArthur Boulevard to the freeway below. Others described passing a body on the freeway covered in a yellow tarp.

Olivera said Irvine Police Department is handling the matter, which is being investigated as a suicide.

Irvine Police spokeswoman Sgt. Karie Davies confirmed Monday that an individual jumped onto the freeway and was struck by a vehicle but said she could not provide more details.

Olivera said no other vehicles were involved in the incident and reported no further injuries from the driver of the truck or anyone else on scene.

The Orange County coroner’s office reported Monday afternoon the victim’s name was not yet being released to the public, pending notification of next of kin.
