Huntington Beach man dies from injuries after car collides into Newport Beach cat shelter

A 21-year-old Huntington Beach man died early Sunday morning after a vehicle he was driving crashed into a cat adoption center off the Pacific Crest Highway in Newport Beach several hours earlier, officials and reports have confirmed.

Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Heather Rangel said Monday officers were called to the scene at around 11:10 p.m. Saturday regarding a single-vehicle collision on the 6000 block of West Coast Highway.

Zackary Topolewski-Jury was the only occupant inside the vehicle, which appeared to be a sedan, possibly a Ford Mustang, Rangel reported. The business, reported as the no-kill shelter National Cat Protection Society, was closed at the time and appeared not to have sustained any serious damage from the collision.

Topolewski-Jury was transported to Orange County Global Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 4:50 a.m. Sunday, according to a report from the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Kelly Keyes, supervising deputy director for the Orange County Coroner’s Office, said Monday an external examination determined Topolewski-Jury died from multiple blunt trauma injuries. She said a toxicology report was still pending.

Rangel said it could not immediately be determined what may have caused the collision and an investigation is underway.
