Gov. Gavin Newsom adds Orange County to COVID-19 watch list

California Gov. Gavin Newsom added Orange County to a list of 19 total counties he is monitoring due to increasing COVID-19 rates, he said Monday.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 456 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, increasing the total number of cases to 13,064, the third-most of any county in the state. Of those cases, an estimated 7,193 people have recovered to date.

There were also four new deaths reported, bringing the county’s death count to 330 due to the respiratory disease. That figure includes 171 skilled nursing facility residents, and two people experiencing homelessness.

There were 56 COVID-19 related deaths reported last week in the county, the largest weekly total since the pandemic began.

According to more advanced data released by the agency, there are 109.2 cases of COVID-19 per 10,000 people in the county, well above the California Department of Public Health threshold of 25 per 10,000. Additionally, 9.3% of people in the county are testing positive for the disease, an increase over the 7% who tested positive on June 11.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are also increasing in the county and are currently at 485 people, including 175 in the intensive care unit.

• Santa Ana: 2,734 cases; 86 deaths
• Anaheim: 2,463 cases; 83 deaths
• Huntington Beach: 593 cases; 37 deaths
• Irvine: 365 cases; 5 deaths
• Costa Mesa: 320 cases; 2 deaths
• Newport Beach: 272 cases; 2 deaths
• Fountain Valley: 116 cases; 6 deaths
• Laguna Beach: 59 cases; 0 deaths
