Orange County reports 59 new coronavirus cases

Orange County reported 59 new cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 on Monday, according to updated data from the Orange County Heath Care Agency.

There were no new deaths reported on Monday, which leaves the county death toll due to the virus at 88 people, a total that includes 23 skilled-nursing-facility residents.

The coronavirus case count in Orange County is now 4,434, including 461 skilled-nursing-facility residents and 350 county jail inmates.

The number of new cases Monday was the lowest since May 12, when 59 new cases also were reported. Two days later, 226 new cases were reported, the highest single-day total during the pandemic.

Only 166 tests were reported administered Sunday, the lowest total during the pandemic. To date, 80,533 people have been tested in the county for the coronavirus.

There are 194 people in Orange County hospitalized with the virus, including 78 in intensive care, with 21 of 25 eligible hospitals reporting. The numbers are down from Saturday, when 235 patients were hospitalized due to COVID-19, with 24 of the 25 eligible hospitals reporting.

By age group, the most cases in the county come in the age ranges of 25 to 34 and 45 to 54. Each age group makes up 18% of the cases to date. People ages 55 to 64 represent 16% of the cases, and those 35 to 44 make up 15% of the cases.

In terms of the cumulative COVID-19 deaths, the elderly continue to be at increased risk. Nearly one-third of the county’s deaths — 32% — have been in people aged 75 to 84. Those 85 and older account for 24% of the deaths, and 16% of the deaths were people ages 65 to 74.

Of the reported deaths in the county, 34% have been Latino, 21% have been white and 10% have been Asian. Males account for 53% of the reported cases and 58% of the deaths.

  • Santa Ana: 744 (22.0 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Anaheim: 701 (19.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Huntington Beach: 291 (14.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Irvine: 154 (5.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Newport Beach: 133 (15.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Costa Mesa: 64 (5.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Fountain Valley: 50 (8.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Laguna Beach: 44 (18.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
