55 new coronavirus cases reported in Orange County

There were 55 new cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 reported Monday in Orange County but no new deaths, in updated data released by the Orange County Heath Care Agency.

The respiratory disease has now been responsible for 3,557 cumulative cases to date in the county, including 337 skilled nursing facility residents and 259 jail inmates. The county death toll from COVID-19 is now 76 people.

Monday’s numbers are the lowest in recent days. The 55 new cases reported are the least in a single day since there were 32 new cases on April 28.

The new figures come after California entered its first weekend of Stage 2 of reopening. Certain retail businesses like bookstores, clothing stores, toy stores and florists were open for curbside pickup beginning Friday.

Later in Stage 2, retail restrictions are expected to be relaxed, along with the reopening of schools, childcare, offices and limited hospitality and personnel services.

There were just 196 new tests for the virus reported Sunday. To date, 52,982 people in the county have been tested.

A total of 196 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Sunday, including 77 people in intensive-care units. Those figures are with 23 of 25 eligible hospitals reporting.

The numbers continue to show cases balanced among different age groups of the population, though the deaths have been heavily skewed toward older victims. Among reported Orange County cases, 18% have been in people ages 25 to 34, and 18% more in ages 45 to 54. The age range of 55 to 64 accounts for 16% of the cases, while 15% are ages 35 to 44.

However, 69% of the people who have died from the virus were 65 or older. A total of 29% of the cases were in people ages 75 to 84, and 24% in those aged 85 and older.

Males account for 54% of the cumulative coronavirus cases in the county, and 58% of the deaths.

Here are the latest case counts for select cities, with their numbers per 10,000 residents:

• Santa Ana: 546 (16.2 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Anaheim: 540 (15.0 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Huntington Beach: 269 (13.2 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Irvine: 142 (5.1 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Newport Beach: 130 (14.9 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Costa Mesa: 50 (4.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Fountain Valley: 41 (7.2 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Laguna Beach: 40 (17.1 cases per 10,000 residents)
