Orange County reports single-day high of 145 new COVID-19 cases
A single-day high of 145 new Orange County COVID-19 cases was reported Thursday by the Orange County Health Care Agency.
It’s the fourth day in the last six with at least 100 new cases reported. That number had been reached just once previously, when 104 cases were reported on April 1.
The agency also reported Thursday that one additional person has died due to COVID-19, marking three straight days of at least one death in the county as a result of the respiratory disease.
The death toll has now reached 45 in the county. The number of cumulative cases, including deaths, is 2,393. As of Wednesday, the most hospitalized on a single day has been 190 people with 63 in intensive care.
Huntington Beach reacted within hours with a vow to take legal action against the state in light of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order. Newport Beach is considering it.
There were 1,594 tests reported Thursday, and a total of 31,534 tests to date in the county.
The cases are spread out between different age groups, with 19% of them between ages 45-54. Seventeen percent of the reported cases were ages 25-34, and 17% more were 55-64. The age group of 35-44 had 15% of the COVID-19 cases.
However, the deaths due to COVID-19 are heavily skewed toward the elderly, as 67% of the reported deaths were people aged 55 and older. A full one-third of the reported deaths were people between ages 75-84, while 18% were people aged 85 and older and 16% were ages 55-64.
The slight majority of the COVID-19 cases are men, 53%, and men also represent 62% of the deaths.
People identified as Hispanic or Latino make up 33% of the cases, followed by people identified as white at 29%.
According to the data, Asians, who make up just 12% of the cases, represent 27% of the reported deaths. That’s just slightly behind whites, 31%, and Hispanic/Latinos , 29%.
Elisa Gimenez said the idea came about after seeing stories circulate on social media about nurses and doctors with bruises from their personal protective equipment.
Santa Ana remains the Orange County city with the most cases, with 366 as of Thursday, an increase of 36 cases from Wednesday. Anaheim has 346 reported COVID-19 cases.
Among local cities, Huntington Beach has 223 cases. Newport Beach has 97 cases, Costa Mesa 40, Laguna Beach 37 and Fountain Valley 32.
