Orange County reports 3 more coronavirus deaths, bringing total to 28; infections top 1,500

Three more people have died of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Orange County, bringing the total to 28.

The county Health Care Agency reported the deaths Friday, following three reported Thursday and three Wednesday.

With Friday’s update, the total of known countywide cases stands at 1,501. That count comes from 16,371 tests.

Deaths attributed to COVID-19 have come in fits and starts in Orange County since the first was announced March 24. Some days, there are no fatalities. On days when deaths are reported, the daily toll ranges from one to three. This week’s run of nine deaths in three days matches a high-water mark between March 31 and April 2.

Among the 28 people who have died, 15 were older than 65, the age group considered to be most at risk. Ten others were between 45 and 64.

The Health Care Agency also said 129 people were hospitalized with the virus Friday, 48 of them in intensive care.

Here are the latest case counts for select cities, with their numbers per 10,000 residents:

  • Anaheim: 178 (five cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Santa Ana: 149 (4.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Irvine: 111 (four cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Huntington Beach: 103 (5.1 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Newport Beach: 90 (10.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Laguna Beach: 36 (15.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Costa Mesa: 29 (2.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Fountain Valley: 24 (4.2 cases per 10,000 residents)
