Huntington Beach closes metered parking along Pacific Coast Highway

First, it was the parking lots. Now, it’s the parking meters.

The city of Huntington Beach announced Thursday that it would be closing its metered parking along the beachside of Pacific Coast Highway as a measure to curb the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

In a news release, the city said that the closures would further reduce the number of visitors to the city’s beaches. The city closed its pier on March 23. Beach parking lots and grass areas adjacent to the city beach path are also closed.

Two additional grass areas between Ninth and 11th streets and at the Seapoint Picnic Area have been fenced off and closed.

Huntington Beach police will patrol the beachside parking meters and any vehicles illegally parked there will be ticketed or towed starting Friday. The city cautioned visitors against parking in nearby residential areas saying patrol officers will be monitoring the neighborhoods.

“The intent of closing these stalls is to limit visitation to the beach and flatten the curve of COVID19 cases in Huntington Beach,” the statement reads. “This is a temporary closure only, but it will have real impacts by saving lives and bringing an end to this pandemic.”
