Huntington Beach Union High School District extends campus closures to May

The Huntington Beach Union High School District announced Tuesday that it is extending its campus closures into May in response to the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement released to the community, the district said that it, in consensus with the district’s board of trustees and feeder school districts, would extend the closure of its six comprehensive high school campuses and three alternative education schools through May 1.

The district originally closed its campuses to the public March 16 with the intent of reopening March 30. It then extended the closure to April 17.

Supt. Clint Harwick said in the statement that teachers will resume grading “while awaiting further direction from state agencies.”

“We are aware that students, parents and educators continue to be concerned about a lack of statewide grading and credit requirements,” Harwick said. “There is an expectation that the governor and/or the state superintendent of public instruction may address this issue in the coming weeks.”

The district released online enrichment activities for students March 25, but its plans for long-term distance learning remained unclear Tuesday.

The district will continue lunch distribution to students from all school sites for pickup at Ocean View and Westminster high schools, except during spring break April 13-17.
