The city of Laguna Beach looked up the coast to find its new director of community development.

Marc Wiener will take over that role on Dec. 30. He comes to Laguna Beach after 11 years with the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea, most recently serving as its community planning and building director.

During his time in Carmel, he was involved in developing the city’s short-term lodging and street vendor ordinances and worked with local businesses to address downtown vacancy rates.

Over the last four years, Wiener oversaw the city’s planning, building safety, zoning and code compliance divisions.

“I am honored that the city of Laguna Beach has selected me as its next community development director,” he wrote in an e-mail Tuesday night. “Laguna Beach is a city that values its rich character and history and places high standards on new development.”

Wiener added that he thinks his experience in Carmel will serve him well in his new role.

“I intend to build a strong relationship with the city staff, as well as the community,” he said. “I consider myself to be a good listener and problem solver and am looking forward to serving the city of Laguna Beach.”

Wiener received his master’s degree in urban planning from San Jose State and is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners.

“The role of community development director is key for the city of Laguna Beach and we are fortunate to have Marc come aboard to lead our community development efforts,” City Manager John Pietig said in a statement.

Wiener will succeed Greg Pfost, who will officially retire in June.

In his new position, Wiener will provide management and oversight for all department services including planning, zoning, building and permitting, code enforcement and historic preservation.

According to a city statement, Wiener will continue work on large-scale and advanced planning projects such as updates to the city’s general plan, the Downtown Specific Plan and ongoing work with the California Coastal Commission.
