TLC celebrates five years with club

The TLC Branch recently celebrated its five-year anniversary as part of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach with a pancake breakfast for 200 staff, families and friends in Bluebird Park, and a grand-reopen house showcasing the branch’s brand new floors and computer center.

The quaint Clubhouse, which offers after school programs and summer recreation daily to 65 Laguna kids, has had a fortuitous year with help from the Laguna Beach Rotary Club, whose members donated funds to help with TLC’s mini-renovation.

The event also provided friends with an opportunity to give gifts to “the little club.” TLC received much-needed programming supplies and generous contributions to the program costs of the branch.

Club staff would like to thank the event sponsors: Tom and Cindy Kennedy, Nick and Lynne Pivaroff, Mike and Carrie Reynolds, Heather Gardea, North Coast Starbucks and Inside the Outdoors.

Underage drinking topic of town hall

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Orange County Community Alliance Network and Laguna Beach Unified School District will hold an Underage Drinking Town Hall Meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 18 at the Laguna Beach High School Library, 625 Park Ave.

The meeting will feature physicians, law enforcement and youth, and will aim to increase adult awareness of the prevalence and consequences of underage drinking.

Send reservations to Robert Billinger at [email protected].

Car wash benefits orphanage

Community Learning Center will hold its third annual Car Wash and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to benefit children at the Door of Faith Orphanage.

The event will take place in the school district parking lot at 550 Blumont St. at Park Avenue, where students will work hard to raise funds for other children in need.

In an effort to help the environment and curb water waste, the center will offer a waterless carwash, with the help of professional auto detailer and Laguna Beach High alumnus Paul Bojorquez, who has created a faster, more spotless method for cleaning and shining cars without the use of water.

Cost is $12 per car; $17 for trucks and SUVs.

For fastidious car owners, Bojorquez Professional Mobile Auto Detail specialists will be standing by to perform complete professional detailing on the spot for a negotiated rate that will benefit the orphanage.

Advance tickets are available and can be bought from any center family or by contacting Pieter Wolters at (949) 715-2165 or [email protected]. For those who wish to donate but cannot attend, checks can be made out to Pieter Wolters and mailed to or dropped off at 515 El Bosque, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. All donations will benefit the orphanage.

The orphanage is completely dependent on charity, and it’s feeling the pinch from many volunteer groups canceling their visits and the donations they bring. Located south of Rosarito in Baja’s La Mision Valley, Door of Faith Orphanage feeds, houses, clothes and educates more than 100 children.

“The costs of running the orphanage are substantial,” said Wolters, a center parent. “It’s a spring tradition to share our bounty and create a connection between children on opposite sides of the border. Because of the turmoil that has wreaked havoc with the economy in Baja, we decided it’s more important than ever to continue this tradition.”

Class of ’85 plans reunion

Laguna Beach High’s Class of 1985 will celebrate its 25th year reunion with festivities from Aug. 6 to 8.

The weekend will kick off with a pre-reunion party at 9 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Sandpiper and will conclude with a family day at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 at Bluebird Park.

The official reunion, open to ’85 grads only, will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Woman’s Club. The San Francisco Bay-based band the Doormats, composed of Laguna grads, will perform at the event.

Reunion organizers Garth Bradley and Ted Hudzinski created a Facebook group called LBHS Class of 1985 to bring alumni together and communicate reunion details to the 113 members of the group. With nearly 300 students in the graduating class of 1985, they are still in the process of tracking down alumni to let them know about the reunion.

“This has been 25 years in the making. It will be the party of your lifetime. This will be talked about forever. It will go down in history,” Hudzinski said.

There is a nominal fee to attend. Reservations are requested by May 31; call (949) 322-9268 or e-mail [email protected].
