Ann Hampton Callaway and Amanda McBroom will kick off Segerstrom’s cabaret series
Segerstrom Center for the Arts will welcome two leading cabaret singers and songwriters for a three-night concert Oct. 5 to 7 in the Samueli Theater.
Ann Hampton Callaway and Amanda McBroom will share the bill and kick off the Center’s 2017-18 Cabaret Series with “Divalicious,” a set of duets and solos celebrating the duo’s new works, as well as Great American Songbook standards.
Pianist and songwriter Michele Brourman will accompany the vocalists.
“This is an uplifting show,” Callaway said. “We’re telling stories of love and hope and embracing humanity — there’s this sort of joyful sense that life is good, and we feel a sense of reassurance that life is beautiful. The timing is to bring everyone together.”
Callaway, 59, is best known for her Tony Award-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical “Swing!” and for writing and singing the theme song to the television series “The Nanny.”
The Platinum Award-winning writer’s songs are featured on seven of Barbra Streisand’s more-recent albums. She collaborated with Cole Porter and has written with Carole King, Barbara Carroll and Rolf Lovland.
Callaway plans to perform songs by Porter, George Gershwin, Dorothy Fields and other blues hits for the Cabaret Series, along with original pieces she has written with McBroom and Brourman.
She and McBroom have known each other for 20 years, and the two had conceptualized the show with Brourman that debuted in London to well-acclaimed reviews.
McBroom, 70, first gained attention when Bette Midler’s version of McBroom’s song “The Rose” hit No.1 in 1979.
Her songs have been recorded by Barry Manilow, Harry Belafonte, Judy Collins, Kurt Cobain and Anne Murray. She wrote all of the songs for 16 Universal Cartoon videos with Brourman.
McBroom said she, Brourman and Callaway selected works from some of their favorite songwriters to feature in their show.
“We would hope the audience considers music as a healing art form,” McBroom said. “In the times now, we want to offer an evening of hope, humor and some things that will touch hearts or make people chuckle.”
