In The Arts: Festival fashion show returns Aug. 18

The Festival Runway Show returns from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Festival of Arts grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

The fourth annual show features fashions that come from 80% of recycled, reused or reclaimed materials.

Three judges, including a celebrity, will select the winner and the fashion show attendees will be able to cast their vote for People’s Choice Award, according to news a release.

Judges are Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s curator of costumes and textiles, Kaye Spilker, and Jeannie Mai, host of Style Channels fashion makeover show “How Do I Look?” Jerry Penacoli of “Extra”will again host the event.

Last year’s winning design was a full-length wedding dress made in cellophane that could be removed layer by layer to reveal a miniskirt bodice.

“Festival Runway Fashion is quickly becoming a signature Festival of Arts event,” said Susan Davis, director of special events for the Festival of Arts, in a statement. “Every year seems to up the ante, and this year won’t disappoint.”

Artists competing include Luciano Bortone, Dagmar Chaplin, Bradley Elsberry, Michelle Lance, Rick Graves, Adam Neeley, Jon Seeman, John Tolle, and Annette Wimmer, the release said.

Film Society premiering edgy film, ‘Cloudless’

The Laguna Beach Film Society premieres “Cloudless,” a film about a same-sex couple who haven’t been allowed to marry and now face one of them being put into a nursing home by family members, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Laguna Art Museum.

“The film is funny, risque and an award-winner opening for an exclusive performance in Laguna Beach,” a press release said. Olympa Dukakis stars in the movie.

The event, which includes a food and wine, starts at 6 p.m. at the Laguna Art Museum, 307 Cliff Drive. Tickets are $15 at the door just for the film, $10 for students with IDs, and $20 for the film and food fest. Event is free to society members.

Art-A-Fair celebrating 46 years on Sunday

The Art-A-Fair celebrates its 46th anniversary from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at its grounds, 777 Laguna Canyon Road.

Visitors can enjoy the 125-artist show for free, talk to the artists, watch them create art and enjoy live music by Caribbean band Upstream from noon to 3 p.m. and blues, Motown and R&B; music from Blue Daddy from 4 to 7 p.m.

Art Talks series continues with theme of mixed media art

“Art Talks: A Lecture Series” will cover the topic of art in mixed media and the process of restoring and preserving two-dimensional art during two sessions from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Painter and ceramicist Mike Tauber, also a Festival of Arts exhibitor, will moderate a discussion about mixed media art. He will be joined by artists Marlo Bartels, V. Lee Cabinilla, Rose Hamner and Andrew Myers.

“The artists we’ll hear from on the 14th are, in my opinion, some of the bravest artists around,” Tauber said in a news release. “I admire the way these artists are pushing their limits to try new combinations of materials and techniques.”

Fine art conservator Derby Williams will on Thursday will explain the “how and why” of restoring and preserving two-dimensional art, the release said. Derby has been a noted professional artist and conservator for many years.
