Friends of the Library: Library to take part in earthquake drill
The western part of Southern California is highly susceptible to earthquakes and their effects. Numerous fault lines crisscross southern California and no one within the region lives more than 10 miles from an active fault.
At 10:20 a.m. Oct. 20, the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library, 1855 Park Ave., will participate in the 2011 Southern California Shakeout, the largest earthquake drill in United States history. The purpose of the drill is to motivate Southern Californians to be prepared for a big earthquake and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.
Everyone at the library will get to participate in the drill and also will have a chance to win a first aid kit and other goodies. There will be lists of items you should have on hand, if you need to leave the area or need to survive without electricity or water for a period of time.

Facebook and Twitter class
If you would like to get onto Facebook and Twitter but don’t know how to do this, consider attending a class from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Mesa Verde Library, 2969 Mesa Verde Drive East, to learn the basics.
An easy-to-follow instructional presentation will explain four main areas: Why to consider having a Facebook or Twitter account; how to register; how to find people and how to preserve your privacy; and what else can you do with it.
For more information, call the Mesa Verde Library at (714) 546-5274.

Celebrate Halloween at the library
It’s “pumpkin time” everywhere this time of year, and our libraries are no exception. Many library programs at both the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library and the Mesa Verde Library have “Halloween” themes.
At the Dungan Library, there will be Halloween-themed Tales and Toys at 2 p.m. Tuesday and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“Mickey’s House of Mouse Villains” will be the Halloween Family Movie at 2 p.m. Oct. 22.
The family movie at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 will be “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” and “Hocus Pocus” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26.
On Oct. 28, teens and adults can visit the all-day Halloween-themed craft table before 4 p.m. and make their own bookmark to take home.
There will be a Halloween Dress-up Storytime at 11 a.m. Oct. 31 . Bring your children in their Halloween costumes. As an added treat, there is free face-painting sponsored by the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries. All children and families are invited to attend this free program.
At the Mesa Verde Library, the Halloween theme will be celebrated when Cynthia Callard from Bowers Museum will present a “Day of the Dead” program from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27. She will tell the story “The Mask” as well as the history and the meaning of the holiday. The participants will then make their own colorful Calavera masks.

Costa Mesa library memories?
In the past several months, I have been relating some history of our libraries in Costa Mesa. What I would also like to do is include some of your memories of our three libraries — and the various buildings that have held them.
Do you remember Storytimes in the past? What about studying at the library? Meeting friends there? Your favorite spot to do homework research? Perhaps you remember the subject clipping file at the old Costa Mesa Library on Center Street? Or what you really wanted to see at the library.
Please send your comments to me at [email protected], or to Mary Ellen Goddard, Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries, 2969 Mesa Verde Drive East, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.
MARY ELLEN GODDARD produced this column on behalf of the Friends of Costa Mesa Libraries, the Costa Mesa Library Foundation and the three Costa Mesa Libraries in the Orange County Public Libraries.
