Detroit Bar hosts fundraiser for veterinary hospital

COSTA MESA — A benefit concert will be hosted Saturday at Detroit Bar to raise funds for a nonprofit sea mammal organization in Laguna Beach damaged by December storms.

The music venue and Rasta Taco, a mobile food catering company, joined in partnership for the fundraiser to benefit the Pacific Marine Mammal Center’s Flood Relief Fund, according to a press release.

Heavy rainfall overwhelmed the drainage system of the center on Dec. 22, resulting in more than four feet of water flooding the interior of the veterinary hospital.

Major appliances, medical equipment and supplies were damaged or destroyed. As a result, the center has been unable to treat seals or sea lions as normal. Winter and early spring are the times when the center receives its largest influx of mammals needing medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Pups, when weaning from their mothers during these times, are more likely to have medical issues, according to the center’s website.

“This benefit parlays well with our vision of working not only with the public at large, but with people, companies, and non-profits that represent the community well,” Mario Melendez, Rasta Taco marketing manager, said in a prepared statement. “We look forward to a fun evening and listening to some great music.”

My Hero, Speaker Junkies and DJs will begin a 9 p.m. at the Detroit Bar, 834 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa. The event is for ages 21 and older only. Tickets are $10.
