CRYSTAL COVE STATE PARK

Crystal Cove State Park, 8471 N. Coast Hwy, has 3.5 miles of beach and 2,000 acres of undeveloped woodland. $15 day-use parking fee.

The park is open 6 a.m. to sunset daily. Docent-led backcountry hikes are scheduled for 9 a.m. most Saturdays and Sundays.

Junior Rangers: 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Park rangers discuss the ecology of Crystal Cove State Park. On Tuesday, it’s “Earth in Danger” with “Nocturnal Animals” on Thursday. Meet at Pelican Point Lot. No. 4.

Historic Walk: 10 a.m. Saturday. Learn about the past of the 12-acre Historic District at Crystal Cove State Park and hear about the difference uses for each cottage. Meet at the Los Trancos parking lot at the trailer.

Tidepool Walk: 8 a.m. Saturday. Take a guided tidepool walk at Pelican Point with an experienced volunteer. Meet at Pelican Point Parking Lot No. 2, near the parking lot. (Turn coastward at Newport Coast, right at the kiosk and left into the first lot.) $15 day-use parking fee.

LAGUNA COAST WILDERNESS PARK

Rangers staff the park daily. Open 7 a.m. to sunset daily, including holidays. Parking lot hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Native Plant Hike: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Learn to identify native plants with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist Nadine Nordstrom (author of “South Coast Wilderness Plant Identification Guide”) on this moderate but steep and rocky, 3.5-mile hike. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Willow Canyon Staging Area (20101 Laguna Canyon Road, just south of El Toro Road intersection). Reservations are required. Call (949) 923-2235. Parking is $3. Donation is $2 per person.

Fitness Hike: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Raise your heart rate and your spirits on this difficult, strenuous and fast-paced, 5-mile hike. Not for beginners. Hiking poles are suggested. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Ridge Park Staging Area (Newport Coast Drive to Ridge Park Road east to end; meet at the gate.) Reservations are required, so call (949) 923-2235. Donation is $2 per person.

Yoga for Seniors: 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Enjoy a peaceful, 1.5-mile walk as you learn yoga stretches and breathing and relaxation exercises with Laguna Canyon Foundation senior volunteers. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (east side of Laguna Canyon Road/SR-133, just north of the 73 Toll Road). Reservations are required, so call (949) 923-2235. Parking is $3. Donation is $2 per person.
