Pageant seeks new narrator
Skip Conover, the voice behind the annual Pageant of the Masters, has retired from his position as narrator. Conover began his tenure in 1994, replacing Thurl Ravenscroft — the voice of Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger. Conover never missed a performance, according to a news release. He narrated 60 nights for 17 seasons and his 1,000 pageant narrations were always live.
“Skip is of a rare breed of voice artists. He knows how to charm an audience, how to make them feel comfortable,” Pageant director Diane Challis Davy said in a statement. “He’s like a friend or a confidante. He never ‘lectured’ the audience and yet he managed to inform them. And like a true professional, he made it seem easy.”
Conover has cited back problems as one of the reasons he has decided to step away from the microphone.
He delivered his decision in a letter to staff.
“The pride I felt each night as I began my trek up to the booth [came from] knowing that a unique and gifted group of people had my back, so it was simply a matter of sewing together a beautiful tapestry using the orchestra as my thread and giving every audience the thrill of a lifetime,” he said in the letter, according to the release. “We both hope and pray the Pageant will continue to shine like the beautiful and unique star that it is.”
The Pageant is interviewing narrators and will reveal the new candidate to the public once a contract is signed.
The 2011 Pageant, “Only Make Believe?”, begins July 7. For more information, visit pageanttickets.com.
