An assistant baseball coach at John Burroughs High School was arrested Friday on suspicion of having an ongoing sexual relationship with a student, police said.

Burbank resident Jose Banuelos Jr., 28, who also works part-time for the city’s parks and recreation department, began the relationship about two-and-a-half years ago, when the student was 15 years old, according to Burbank Police Sgt. Claudio Losacco.

The student’s family called police Thursday evening, after which the victim told them of her ongoing “consensual” relationship, Losacco said.

Police arrested Banuelos in the parking lot of Ralphs grocery store, located at 2600 W. Victory Blvd., where he was reportedly in possession of a loaded handgun.

Banuelos is being held in lieu of $325,000 bail and is due in court next week.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Burbank Police Det. John Voorhis at (818) 238-3210. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
