The Times is tracking the COVID-19 outbreak among state prison inmates and staff across the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation system. The state releases new inmate figures daily and staff data weekly.
The data do not include federal prisons, immigration detention facilities or local jails.

The virus thrives in crowded settings such as prisons. Cases began to surge in May 2020 and peaked in December.
Over the past week, the state prisons have averaged 4 new cases and 0 new deaths per day.
