The latest selfies: Guys and sharks off Huntington Beach
Two men on stand-up paddleboards filmed themselves in a video released Saturday purposely getting close to two sharks near Huntington Beach and photographing the experience from above and below the water.
“There he is,” a man says at the beginning of the video before smiling and looking into the camera. “There’s two, there’s another one going the other way.”
The video, posted on YouTube, states that the two juvenile great white sharks were filmed Friday. The men were identified in news reports as Courtney Hemerick of Aliso Viejo and Joseph Trucksess of San Clemente.
During the more than two-minute video, the photographer repeatedly dunks the camera below the water’s surface, capturing several shots of a shark as it swims by.
The men continue to move their boards alongside the shark, with one of the men paddling directly over the shark at one point.
The video ends with the photographer sitting on his board with his legs fully submerged.
Several sightings of young great white sharks have been reported off Surfside in Seal Beach and Sunset Beach in Huntington Beach since late April.
Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach, told the Huntington Beach Independent that the great whites could be turning up because of the unseasonably warm water or the abundance of stingrays they can feed on.
Seal Beach lifeguards said they are cautioning beachgoers about the sharks but won’t take further action if the sharks continue not to bother swimmers and surfers.
